Where the defaults come from

The ASPCA’s “Cutting Pet Care Costs” page (labeled 2021 update) lists these figures for a cat:

Annual cost ASPCA estimate
Food $225
Routine medical $160
Litter $150
Preventive medication $140
Health insurance $348
Treats $36
Toys $22
Grooming supplies $28
License $15
Kennel/boarding ($25 per day; the ASPCA total includes one day) $25
Annual total $1,149
One-time cost (first year) ASPCA estimate
Initial medical $175
Spay/neuter $150
Carrier $40
Microchip $20
Litter box $20
Grooming tools $20
Collar $15
Scratching post $15
Initial total $455

The ASPCA’s first-year total of $1,904 also includes dental care ($300). The calculator lists dental care as an optional yearly line set to $0; enter the ASPCA figure or your vet’s price if it applies.

How the calculator adds it up

Yearly cost = sum of recurring lines
Monthly cost = yearly cost ÷ 12
First-year cost = yearly cost + sum of one-time lines

Worked examples

Example 1: the ASPCA defaults as they are. Yearly: $1,149 (about $96 per month). First year: $1,149 + $455 = $1,604.

Example 2: adding dental care as the ASPCA does. Yearly: $1,149 + $300 = $1,449. First year: $1,449 + $455 = $1,904, the ASPCA’s first-year total.

Example 3: no insurance. Set insurance to $0: yearly $801 (about $67 per month).

How to make the estimate your own

  • Food: our cat food calculator gives daily calories. Calories per day × 365 ÷ calories per bag (or can) × price gives your yearly food cost.
  • Litter: price depends heavily on the type of litter and the number of boxes; check what you actually buy in a month and multiply by 12.
  • Vet care: ask your clinic for exam, vaccine and parasite-prevention prices.
  • Insurance: get a quote for your cat’s age and ZIP code.

Limitations

  • National averages from 2021, not today’s prices where you live.
  • Emergencies and chronic illness aren’t included and can cost much more than routine care.
  • Older cats may need more vet care; revisit the routine medical line as your cat ages.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cat cost per year?

The ASPCA's estimate (2021 update) is $1,149 per year in recurring costs for a cat, and $1,904 for the first year once one-time costs like spay/neuter, initial vet care and supplies are added. Your own costs depend on your cat's health, your area and your choices.

Are indoor cats cheaper?

The ASPCA figures don't separate indoor and outdoor cats. Change the preventive medication and other lines to match what your vet recommends for your cat's lifestyle.

Is pet insurance included?

Yes, $348 per year in the ASPCA estimate. Set it to 0 if you won't insure, and consider an emergency fund instead.

Why are the defaults from 2021?

They are the most recent itemized figures the ASPCA publishes. Prices may be higher today, so replace any line with your own quotes.
